World Cup Odds: Ambitious Australia
May 28th, 2014 by G WaldorfThe World Cup is just weeks away, and Australia have played their farewell game in front of a 50,000 strong crowd at the ANZ Stadium. Sure, it was a 1-1 draw against a pretty average South Africa side that hasn’t done anything to shorten Australia’s World Cup odds in the bookies eyes. And, sure, it would be fair to say that Australia put in a performance without real rhythm – in fact, there looked to be some tired legs on the green and gold side – but that’s a symptom, we hear, of an ongoing programme of physical preparation that’s designed to help the players peak at the World Cup in Brazil, not in the warm up game.
But maybe we’ll have to wait for some time after this World Cup for this generation of Socceroos to peak. All we’re looking for is what we got against South Africa: an Australia side that plays to a good high tempo and that attacks aggressively. Because that’ll make it easier for us to watch Australia over the course of their projected long journey to regeneration. There’s no shortage of ambition in the FFA or with coach Ange Postecoglu, who said he could see a day when Australia were rightly considered one of the favourites for the tournament – not under his direction, perhaps, but he’s in the process of laying the foundations for that day. For the time being, Australia’s odds are a good long $501.00 to win the trophy, but we’re excited to see young players like Tommy Oar (who put in a good performance against South Africa) playing with freedom against the best teams in the world…
