World Cup Odds: Australia’s Captain Named
May 21st, 2014 by G WaldorfTimes have changed in the Australia soccer side. Ange Postecoglu has been talking the talk over the past few weeks and months, and now, with a bold selection of young (and pleasingly home-grown) talent, he’s set about walking the walk. There’s going to be no lack at all of pace in the Australia side, leaving the option of the lightning counterattack, but there will be a chronic lack of experience at the game’s highest level. Australia’s World Cup odds are looking long, and the youngsters will need a few cool heads to keep them motivated and on the right track – and that starts with the captain.
There was some speculation as to who would be the man wearing the captain’s armband when Australia run out in their first Group B game against Chile: one of the names in the mix was long-time Australia talisman Tim Cahill, and he was the bookies’ favourite to take the job on, but Ange Postecoglu is proving to be his own man, and he has named Mile Jedinak as the Socceroos captain for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Jedinak is fresh from a great season as captain of his club side – Crystal Palace in the EPL – and he will be hoping to carry forward his bullish form to the World Cup. But his side will face steep odds when they meet their Group B opponents – Chile are first on June 14th – and the odds of them emerging from the group currently stand at a modest $8.50. You’d think, though, that after a strong season as skipper of the perennial Premiership underdogs Crystal Palace, Jedinak is a great choice to lead Australia as they take on some of the biggest teams in world football.
