World Cup Odds: Australia’s Players To Watch

April 23rd, 2014 by G Waldorf

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is drawing closer, and all eyes will be on Brazil come June. We’ve got all sorts of World Cup odds for you to look over, including all of Australia’s World Cup odds – but who will be the players hitting the headlines for the Socceroos? There will be plenty of untested young talent on show, and we’re going to take a look here at a few of those young guns (and a couple of more seasoned campaigners) that we think will be worth keeping an eye on at this World Cup and in the future…

Let’s start with the man who’s the shortest odds to make the side that starts against Chile on June 14th, and a man who is in the mix to captain the side. Tim Cahill is a talisman for the Socceroos, and the news this week that he’s back from injury is a real boost to the side. He’s at short odds of $1.04 to get into the starting eleven for that first group B game, and we might be tempted to back him to get the captain’s armband at $4.50. He’s also Australia’s most prolific goalscorer, and it will be most likely him that registers on the scoresheet if the Socceroos find the net: are you backing them at $1.22 to score at least one goal at the tournament?

Next up is the man most likely to beat Cahill to the captaincy at odds of $1.33: Mile Jedinak. The Crystal Palace skipper has been an instrumental part of their impressive success in the English Premier League, and his strong form has seen Palace not only safe, but playing a role in the title race’s outcome. He’s getting short odds of $1.05 to run out against Chile at the World Cup, and he will definitely be a key man for the Socceroos.

Young goalkeeper Mat Ryan is an exciting prospect, and the odds-on man to take the gloves in the first Group B game – he’s a $1.36 bet. And there are more like him in the squad: young players looking to make this World Cup their first, and hoping to turn in performances that see them in the Australia jersey in the future. Tommy Oar is another exciting talent, especially in a side that coach Ange Postecoglu has said will look to get on the attack as much as possible. We’d love to see another World Cup appearance from Mark Bresciano, and we’re sure he would love to be involved in one more, as well, but it remains to be seen if he can find some fitness and some form before the tournament, and if there’s a berth for him in the new-look Socceroos side.

And there are more names that might be unfamiliar now, but that have the chance to burst into the spotlight come June and the World Cup in Brazil: Ivan Franjic, Mark Milligan, Matthew Leckie, Tom Rogic and Curtis Good are all seeing short odds to be in the eleven against Chile – so why not follow the Australia World Cup odds link and see if there’s a bet or two that takes your fancy. It’s that much sweeter when a youngster has an impact on a big game if you’ve backed him to do it…
