World Cup Odds: Belgian Dark Horses
May 28th, 2014 by G WaldorfThe FIFA World Cup is arguably the most coveted prize in international sport, and it’s a difficult thing to do to win it – a little look at Australia’s World Cup odds will tell you how far the Socceroos have yet to travel before they are genuine contenders for the trophy. But a look at the wider World Cup odds will show you that little Belgium are the fifth most likely side to triumph next month, behind holders Spain, hosts Brazil and giants of the game Argentina and Germany.
History is not on the side of the Belgians, either. They have reached the semi finals, back in 1986, but they failed to qualify last time out and in 2006, and they haven’t appeared in the three most recent European Championships. A look at the Belgium World Cup odds, though, will lighten the hearts of their fans – this is a golden generation of Belgian players, and there’s a feeling that they are ready to reach their best. Much of the credit must go to coach Marc Wilmots, who has forged this Belgium squad into a genuine team, but there’s an embarrassment of talent for him to work with, including one of the most exciting youngsters making the trip to Brazil, Adnan Januzaj. So take a look at those World Cup odds, and have a glance at the Belgium line-up, and see if you think they’re a chance to lift the trophy…
