World Cup Odds: Brazil In Turmoil?
May 21st, 2014 by G WaldorfThere are always a few jitters before a big tournament, we imagine, and the biggest tournament of all is coming to Brazil when the 2014 FIFA World Cup arrives on the sun-kissed shores of the nation that has won it more times than any other. But the Brazil team seem to be one of the points of relative calm in a Brazil racked by mass protests, riots, serious security concerns and severe delays in the preparations for the World Cup. You can check out all the Brazil World Cup odds you like, but if the stadia aren’t ready for the games, that’s where the media focus could end up, and not on the football.
Which is a shame for Luis Felipe Scolari’s Brazil side, who carry the tag of favourites into their first home World Cup since 1950, and who have put together a run of 19 games that includes only one defeat, and a Confederation Cup triumph. There has been plenty of talk about the perceived lack of stellar quality in this Brazil side’s ranks, but there has also been a practical efficiency about the wins that are behind them, and that pragmatism might see them in good stead in a tournament that could be full of distractions, and that will certainly see incredible pressure piled onto Brazil’s players. In Group A with Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon, Brazil will be confident that they can reach the final stages, and they will hope that home support will see them to glory – no team from outside the continent has ever won a World Cup in South America. Brazil will be hoping they don’t start this year…
