World Cup Odds: Brazil Players To Watch
May 28th, 2014 by G WaldorfWith the 2014 FIFA World Cup only weeks away, we find ourselves looking back at the tournaments that have been, and thinking of the players that have etched themselves in our memories. As Australia fans, we remember the Tim Cahills and the Mark Brescianos, but we can also appreciate the players who light up the tournament. And, whilst Australia’s World Cup odds suggest that the man who makes himself a hero in Brazil won’t be wearing green and gold – at least not in the knockout stages – we thought we’d have a little look at the candidates…
There has been talk that the Brazil side that will contest the first World Cup on their home soil since 1950 is lacking in star power, so we’ll start our breakdown of the players who could turn the tournament for them. First up is Neymar, who will wear Pele’s iconic number 10 jersey. He’s a 22-year-old who will have to bear the weight of his nation’s considerable expectations, but Neymar is far from inexperienced on the international stage (he scored in the final of the Confederations Cup, and was a key player for Brazil in that tournament), not to mention that he plays at one of the most high-profile clubs in the world, Barcelona. Neymar will be partnered up front by Fred, another of Brazil’s key men at the World Cup. Crucial to Brazil’s hopes will be the goals that Fred has supplied so far, and there’s no reason to suppose there will be a drought next month.
You can add any number of players who will be central to the Brazil World Cup effort on home soil, but you’ll hear the names Paulinho, Thiago Silva and Oscar often while the home side are in action, and if they all play well, then expect Brazil’s World Cup odds to shorten…
