World Cup Odds: Can Australia Come Home Heroes?
June 9th, 2014 by G WaldorfAustralia will line up against Chile at the weekend, and another World Cup journey will have begun. Looking at the Australia World Cup odds hasn’t been something that has injected joy into our days in the run-up to the World Cup in Brazil, though – the Socceroos are an outside chance, to say the least. But this is the World Cup, and stranger things have happened than Australia qualifying from the ‘group of death’…
There won’t be many of you reading this who remember the World Cup against-the-odds stories of 1950 (Uruguay humbling mighty Brazil) or 1966 (North Korea become the first team from outside the Americas or Europe to make it to the second round), but we can definitely remember Roger Milla’s Cameroon in 1990, and South Korean heroics in 2002. And, cast your mind back, if you will, to 2006, and the World Cup in Germany. A little-fancied team called Australia made it through to the knockout stages and a defeat by Italy that still hurts us now.
So this young Australia squad won’t have to look far for inspiration at the Brazil World Cup – Tim Cahill can tell them what it was like to defy the odds. And maybe, just maybe, the ‘group of death’ could be the making of another Socceroos legend. Soak up Australia’s World Cup odds – and the World Cup odds for the rest of the tournament – and make sure you’ve seen the specials on Sportsbet right now. If there are going to be heroes in Brazil, you want to have backed them!
