World Cup Odds: England Squad Announced

May 14th, 2014 by G Waldorf

England coach Roy Hodgson’s cards are on the table. The England squad that will make the journey to the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil has been announced, to the usual chorus of voices in the English press that know better than the manager of the national team. To see how the announcement has affected England’s World Cup odds, just follow the link, and keep on reading for more details…

Grabbing the headlines immediately after the squad’s announcement is the omission of veteran left back Ashley Cole, one of the most seasoned players in English football, and certainly in no shortage of form for his club. Cole responded to the news by retiring from international football, and making himself unavailable for the England reserve list – not the best response from him, but he possibly knows more than we do about Hodgson’s thinking for the World Cup. We’ve been full of praise in these pages for Ange Postecoglu’s policy of picking for the future with the Socceroos, and it looks as though a similar attitude has been taken by England. Their young players will have an enormous burden of expectation heaped onto them by the English press and public, no doubt, and there will be little sympathy if they underachieve (which those unrealistic expectations make the most likely outcome). We feel for them, but wish them luck at the same time.

Australia, meanwhile, go into the World Cup with expectations understandably low, and looking at the odds for the World Cup, you can see why. Drawn in Group B with Chile, Spain and the Netherlands, the Socceroos will be up against it.
