World Cup Odds: Goodbye Generation G
April 8th, 2014 by G WaldorfThe 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil will feature a Socceroos side (check out Australia’s World Cup odds here), but it will be a side that has a different feel and a different look to what Australia fans have been used to over the last ten years or so. Ange Postecoglu’s Socceroos side is an exciting proposition, full of talent that is untested at the very highest level. It won’t be after the World Cup in Brazil, of course, and it’s exciting for Australia’s soccer fans to think that a side with that excellent experience behind them will grow into a real force in the Asian Cup that follows in January…
But if there’s a new generation of Socceroos looking to make their first mark on the game’s most exalted stage, then there’s also an element of sadness at the departure of the previous generation, who did so much to raise the profile of soccer in Australia to its current level. We’ve seen the parting shots of what was called a golden generation of Socceroos over the past weeks and months – Harry Kewell’s retirement marks just the most recent of a group of very recognisable faces heading off stage. Some have gone early, some have gone gracefully, some are still to go – what’s for certain, though, is that Ange Postecoglu’s tenure as Australia coach has already been marked as a changing of the guard. It’s not as though there won’t be some wiser heads in the Socceroos squad that travels to Brazil – Cahill, Kennedy and Bresciano all look like making it to their third World Cup – but there will be plenty of youth for them to bring on. And we’re excited by that prospect of a Socceroos side for the future at least as much as we’re excited about the World Cup that kicks off in 64 days.
Because, let’s face it, the Socceroos – regeneration or not – will have their work cut out to register points in Group B of the FIFA World Cup, let alone make it out of the group to contest the knockout stages. On Sportsbet right now, you’ll get $8.00 for a Socceroos qualification from the group, while there’s a $1.25 bet on offer if you think they’ll finish at the bottom of Group B. A real challenge awaits a new generation of Socceroos, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they tackle it.
