World Cup Odds: Neill Out, Squad To Be Announced

May 8th, 2014 by G Waldorf

Lucas Neill has been a fixture of the Australia side for as long as we care to remember, and he’s been the man wearing the captain’s armband since 2006. But no longer. Ange Postecoglu, out of respect to the former skipper, has informed him a week in advance that Neill will not be part of his plans for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. It brings to a close, we assume, a career that included 95 appearances for the Socceroos, the last of which was Postecoglu’s first game in charge.

So with the skipper out, who will be on the roster to travel to Brazil, and who will be the next man to captain Australia? A look at the odds for Australia tell us that he will have to be a man with a positive outlook, who’s not afraid to stand up and be counted. Experience will also be a key factor in a squad that looks set to include no small number of largely-untried youngsters. Tim Cahill and Mile Jedinak are the front-runners in the bookies’ eyes, with the odds in Jedinak’s favour at $1.33. What else the announcement of the Socceroos squad will give us to ponder with fewer than 40 days to go before that first game we’ll see, but whatever happens, Lucas Neill will be a spectator after a stellar career in the green and gold.
