World Cup Odds: Postecoglu The Hero?
May 8th, 2014 by G WaldorfTimes are changing in Australian sport, and they have been over the past 18 months or so, with both the national rugby union and cricket sides re-inventing themselves to once again find success after a disappointing spell. And there are things changing in Australia’s soccer set-up, too – following the same return to the right core values that have worked for cricket and rugby. Australia’s World Cup odds might look steep, but for the Socceroos a win might mean being genuinely competitive with some of the best teams in the world, and helping to decide the fate of their group. That is within reach of a group of young Socceroos with the right attitude.
And the man giving them that attitude is coach Ange Postecoglu, who has already presided over real change in the culture of Australian soccer, and who will be hoping his young charges can express themselves with the whole world watching. We’ve got all the odds you need for the World Cup, including odds for Australia and the odds for Group B, but we don’t think that Postecoglu will be looking too long or too hard at how the bookies rate his side’s chances. To give you an idea of the attitude he’s taking to the World Cup in Brazil, he’s shared in interviews the story of the draw – the day that saw Australia drawn in Group B with Chile, the Netherlands and World Cup holders Spain. Everywhere around him there were heads in hands and sour faces, but he got a text from his son, who was excited that his dad would have a chance to be a hero and make a name for his Australia team. That’s exactly the right way to look at it, and we’re pretty sure that if the Socceroos play with that sort of fearlessness, it’s going to be a memorable World Cup!
