World Cup Odds: Socceroos Win Warm-up
June 4th, 2014 by G WaldorfThe Socceroos have touched down in Brazil, and their World Cup preparations are underway – they won a warm-up game this week. But it wasn’t the result that was the important thing about the warm-up game: it was a final chance for Ange Postecoglu to have a look at his players before trimming his squad to its final 23. Those will be the men who take on Australia’s World Cup odds, and there are a couple of interesting omissions at this late stage…
Tom Rogic failed to impress in the game against a local Brazilian side – he has been struggling with injury through the whole season, and he didn’t look like he had made enough progress in the eyes of the coach. It had in fairness been shaping up to be one of the more difficult decisions facing Postecoglu, but Rogic’s lacklustre performance has made it easy: Rogic would have been a bold choice for Australia. He’s certainly one of the national side’s best prospects for the future, but he can’t play if he’s not fit. Josh Kennedy, Luke Wilkshire and Mark Birighitti were also cut by Postecoglu – they’ll stay with the squad as cover until right up to the start of the tournament, and then they will be in the same boat as the rest of us, watching the Socceroos in action as they tackle those long odds.
