World Cup Odds: Spotlight On Mile Jedinak
April 24th, 2014 by G WaldorfThe name Mile Jedinak is one that will be familiar to Socceroos fans: he’s settled pretty well into the side since his debut in 2008, and you’d have to say that he will likely be a key figure in Ange Postecoglu’s Australia side that makes the trip to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in June. He’ll be aware of the odds facing Australia in Group B, but we don’t see him as the sort of player who’s afraid to tackle the tough odds…
And there are plenty more football fans who’ve become aware of Jedinak since his move to Crystal Palace in the English Premier League. Since arriving at Selhurst Park in 2011, Jedinak has found a firm place in the hearts of Palace fans – a late goal in the last fixture of the 2012-13 regular season that grabbed them a play-off place certainly helped, but his strong form and impressive leadership of the Palace side once he was handed the captain’s armband have only made him more popular, and more essential to Palace’s continued success.
But what of Jedinak’s role for his national side? He skippered the Socceroos against Ecuador in the recent friendly, and whilst the result wasn’t the one he would have wanted, the side played a good brand of soccer, and Jedinak himself got on the scoresheet. He’s the odds-on favourite in the bookies’ eyes to take the captaincy again at the World Cup – he’s a $1.33 bet where the next shortest odds are for Tim Cahill at $4.50. And that makes him an absolutely vital man in the Australia setup, especially since it looks like Postecoglu will take plenty of young talent with him to Brazil – talent that will need the experience of players like Jedinak and Cahill, and some genuine leadership from Jedinak. Fortunately, if the Crystal Palace captain brings anything like his club form to the Socceroos, he’s just the man to provide that strong leadership.
