World Cup Odds: Wade Says Socceroos ‘Will Get Smashed’
May 21st, 2014 by G WaldorfYou might have noticed an upbeat tone in these pages when it comes to the FIFA World Cup that will be kicking off in Brazil in a few short weeks’ time – and especially when it comes to how Australia will go in the tournament. Don’t get us wrong, we’ve seen Australia’s World Cup odds, and we know the size of the challenge that faces the Socceroos squad that has been picked to get on the plane – but we’re excited to see the young, talented players that have been picked, and especially the home-grown talent, in action on the biggest stage soccer has to offer.
But not everyone is excited about Australia’s prospects. The most vocal pessimist this week is former Socceroos captain Paul Wade, and he seems to be in no doubt at all that the odds of $8.50 that we’re seeing for Australia to get out of the group are short, if anything. He was at pains to point out the height of the step up that a few of the very inexperienced Socceroos squad will be making, and emphasised that Group B – comprised of Australia, Chile, World Cup holders Spain and the Netherlands – has to be seen as one of the toughest groups in the 2014 tournament. All true, and if you’re of a mind with Wade, then you might want to look closely at the rest of the World Cup odds and futures we’ve got for you, and maybe rake through the markets on offer for Australia. And perhaps keep the big bet for the Socceroos to lift the trophy in your pocket…
