World Cup Odds: What’s In A Slogan?

We knew it couldn’t last. There has been excitement steadily building for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil (or we’ve been getting excited, at least). We’ve got all your World Cup odds ready for you. Ange Postecoglu has announced his exciting young team, and we’ve got that list of 30 names to ponder in the next few days and weeks. Australia will take a young side to Brazil, and we hope they’ll play without fear and do us proud. All we need now is an awesome slogan, a rallying cry that unites fans behind the Socceroos, and that sticks in our minds when we look back in years to come.

No such luck. FIFA have announced their list of the slogans that will be emblazoned on the coaches that will shift the teams around the country. They’re not an inspiring list, to say the least. The one for England is embarrassing. Brazil’s is just odd. We’re prepared to accept that at least the slogan for the Netherlands – ‘Real Men Wear Orange’ – is amusing. If we’re honest, anything would have been better than: ‘Socceroos: Hopping Into History’. Officially the worst slogan ever? It must be up there.

And it’s not as though the Socceroos won’t have a tough enough time facing up to the teams in Group B – a look at Australia’s World Cup odds gives you an idea of the mountain the young squad has to climb. A mighty rallying cry might have given them a helping hand, but it wasn’t to be…
