World Cup: Spotlight on Cahill, All The Odds
April 11th, 2014 by G WaldorfThere’s been some buzz in the press about a new generation of Socceroos as the FIFA World Cup draws closer, and we’re as excited as anyone to see new talent emerging onto the world stage in the Australia jersey. But if Australia are to give a good account of themselves in Brazil, then youthful exuberance will need to be tempered with a bit of experience. Enter senior players like Tim Cahill.
Just taking a look at Australia’s World Cup odds, you can see that things are stacked against the Socceroos – they find themselves in a group with Spain, Chile and the Netherlands, and they’re staring down odds of $8.00 just to get out of the group. Tim Cahill has been around the block, though, and there isn’t much in the game that he hasn’t seen before, so he’ll be an incredible asset in the Socceroos changing room.
At 34, Tim Cahill is already Australia’s leading goalscorer in internationals, and he’s maybe the likeliest of the Socceroos to get himself on the scoresheet. Either way, he’s right at the heart of the side – new look or not. There have to be points of continuity even in a side that’s reinventing itself, and Ange Postecoglu seems happy to build a new squad around Cahill – you’ll get the shortest odds of Cahill being in the starting XI for the first match against Chile at $1.04. For his part, Cahill seems enthusiastic about the changes being made in the Australia camp, and equally keen to play his own part in building for future success. Despite the result, he was upbeat about the recent friendly against Ecuador: ‘the first half was some of the greatest football I’ve ever seen from the Socceroos, and I’ve been around a long time,’ he said after the game. And he’s right: he has been around a long time, and the disappearance of many other of the same generation of Socceroos have to have set him thinking about how and when to draw a line under all that he has achieved. We’re hoping that he’s able to go out with a real bang in Brazil, and we’ll be watching every minute!
