2007 Cox Plate winner El Segundo could be running his last-ever race in Saturday's edition of the 2040m event at Moonee Valley.Trainer Colin Little has said the eight-year-old may be retired if he fails to pull out a good performance after a series of injuries throughout his career.
Quoted by ABC Grandstand, Little said time seems to be running out for what will be the oldest horse in the field on Saturday, but added he could spring a surprise.
"I would hate him to go out on a disappointing note," Little said.
"One of these days we will retire him. I'm not sure if that's right now. But I will be very disappointed if he runs in a Cox Plate and runs down the track."
El Segundo has been among the front runners in the horse racing betting markets this week, but has always trailed behind favourite Whobegotyou.
IASbet has El Segundo on 15.00, level with Rock Kingdom, with a small group of runners then following between 9.00 and 12.00.
The same bookmaker has Whobegotyou on 3.00, up from 2.70 earlier in the week, while Heart Of Dreams remains the second favourite at 5.50.
