A Guide to betting on eSports
You may already be familiar with eSports; that’s the term for organised video gaming competitions between individual players or teams of players. However, it may be that you are missing out on the fun of betting on eSports and therefore on the possibility of making significant returns on your bets in a very enjoyable way.
Millions of punters are watching live streaming of key games and placing bets with their own online bookmaker and this is a guide to how you too can join the latest exciting trend in online betting.
You'll know already with some of the most popular games such as League Of Legends (LOL), Counter-Strike and Dota 2 and through eSports you can place a bet in the same manner as you would with every other sport. It’s important to remember that the risks are the same as with any other bet, as are the rewards – you choose an event, decide how much you want to stake by perusing the odds and then place your bet.
How to place an eSports Bet
Firstly, if you haven’t already done so, you need to open an account with an online bookmaker and, following their guidelines, deposit money into your account with them. As with traditional betting, when placing a bet on eSports, your stake is often decided by the available odds on the game that you have chosen.
Explanation of eSports Odds
Your betting account may offer odds in Decimal or American format. Decimal format odds are the easiest way to calculate how much you can win; this is how it works. Let’s say that Team A [World of Tanks] has odds of $1.50 and Team B [StarCraft2] has odds of $2.60 – as with any traditional bet the higher the decimal odds the lower the probability of a win.
In this example Team A is the favourite to win and you can work out your winnings by multiplying the Decimal odds by the amount of your bet. For example if you placed $100 on World of Tanks your return would $150 should they win the game.
Futures or Proposition Bets
In addition to the bet described above (match winner bet), you may also wish to place a bet in another market known as Future. For example, the winner of a tournament rather than the winner of an individual match, therefore a popular Future bet would be “who will win the tournament”.
Another alternative is the Proposition bet which considers a specific option such as “how many games will Dota 2 win?” There can also be multiple options within this type of betting.
