Officials have said the condition of the Flemington racetrack is 'perfect' ahead of the start of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Saturday.

The Carnival begins with the $1.5m 2500m Victoria Derby, and track manager Mick Goodie says the surface is in top condition.

He has also said he will be preparing a dead 4 race track on race morning, with the idea that it will become a good 3 during the meeting.

Goodie said: "This policy that has been in place for five years now and it's worked very well, so that's what we'll be aiming for across the carnival.

"The track is in very good shape and it's got a good cover of grass."

The rail will be in the true position on Saturday, after it was out nine metres at the last Flemington meeting on October 3.

This is designed to provide smooth grass from the start of the carnival, with rail positions unset for the rest of the week for added flexibility.

Current Victoria Derby favourite is Shamoline Warrior at 2.75 with Centrebet, while the same bookmaker has Alcopop, Efficient and Viewed down as the 7.00 joint favourites for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.

Current Flemington forecasts predict cloud and rain for Saturday, with highs of 23 degrees and lows of 15.
