Horse racing bookmakers gear up for bumper week

 Bookmakers are expecting a massive $1.67 million to be bet on horse racing over the next four days starting with Victoria Derby day on Saturday.

More than $200 million is expected to be bet on Tuesday's Melbourne Cup alone, with bookies likely to take over 150 million individual bets.

Centrebet is among the online horse racing specialists expecting a busy few days and have been gearing up their computer systems to take the strain.

Quoted by Computer World, Centrebet CIO Stefan Matthews said: "Looking at my wall I’ve got graphs, charts and metrics showing trends and analysis and cross referencing between not only the Melbourne Cup, but between all the core racing events during the spring carnival.

"We know, from a transactional standpoint, how each event in the Spring Racing Carnival correlates with each other and how that is correlating with previous years."

Centrebet has Shamoline Warrior as the favourite for Saturday's Victoria Derby, on odds of 2.90, with Rockferry and Monaco Consul close behind.

The online horse racing specialist also has Viewed as the favourite for the Melbourne Cup, on 5.50.

Betting exchange Betfair had processed around $721,900 in wagers for the Melbourne Cup alone as of Friday.
