On 7th September at midday the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) released the list of 2010 Melbourne Cup first declarations, the list shows the field of hopeful horses is now down to 151.

The 150th Melbourne Cup will run at Flemington as Race 7 on Tuesday 2nd November and 256 horses were originally nominated; however, the connections of only 151 horses paid the $990 fee for first declarations.

The announcement of first declarations will have the Melbourne Cup betting markets springing into action. Several of the expected International contenders that were not among the first declarations today include the 2007 Melbourne Cup runner-up Purple Moon, Japan’s Jaguar Mail along with Meiner Kitz, Mastery and Claremont.

One overseas contender that is a surprise inclusion in the first declarations is Illustrious Blue, the Goodwood Cup winner; and according to trainer William Knight he is still on track for the trip Down Under. Other European runners still in contention include Rite Of Passage, Sans Frontieres and Profound Beauty.

Several notable absentees from the first declarations include the 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and other horses that had earlier been ruled out were Kutchinsky, Littorio and Mark Kavanagh’s Shamoline Warrior.

Bart Cummings, the Melbourne Cup ‘King’ still has 11 stayers as he attempts his 13th win and prominent owner Lloyd Williams still has 13 on the Melbourne Cup trail.
The next declaration stage for the Cup will be out on October 5 followed by the third declarations on October 25 and finally the release of the ultimate field of acceptances on Victoria Derby Day, October 30.

First declarations were also taken on September 7th for the 2010 Caulfield Guineas, 2010 Thousand Guineas, 2010 Caulfield Cup and the 2010 Cox Plate.
