Renowned Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien is heading to Melbourne with some of his top gallopers this year. After nominations closed for the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate on Tuesday, it became clear that O'Brien will be returning mob handed with 15 horses nominated across both races.
It has not been a happy hunting ground for Aidan O'Brien in past years with his only Group 1 winner being Adelaide in the 2014 Cox Plate. He will be hoping to at least double that with the horses he is bringing over this year.
Ones to watch
Highland Reel was an impressive winner of the King George IV and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last week. In what was a tight compact race, Highland Reel won going away once he managed to find a way out of trouble.
The Gurkha managed to reverse placings with the highly rated Galileo Gold last time out at Goodwood. This son of Galileo is sure to put in a bold bid in the Cox Plate.

With over 50 horses entering from around the world, this years races look set to be a true international battle. Greg Carpenter of Racing Victoria was over the moon with the strength in depth from around the world.
“We are delighted to receive entries across the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate from 19 international trainers representing the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, and Ireland,” Carpenter said.
“The international profile of the Spring Racing Carnival continues to grow each year, which is reflected by both the quality of nominations received and the array of world-class trainers represented.
“The most significant story amongst the international contingent is Irish training great Aidan O’Brien, who has bolstered his search for a second Australian Group 1 victory by submitting a record 23 nominations across the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
“His 2015 Cox Plate placegetter Highland Reel and highly-rated Group 1-winning Northern Hemisphere three-year-olds The Gurkha (Sussex Stakes/French Guineas) and Deauville (Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes) are among his standout nominations for the Cox Plate, a race he won in 2014 with Adelaide.
“More broadly, English St Leger winner Simple Verse, Ascot Gold Cup winner Order Of St George, French star Erupt and Sir Michael Stoute’s Exosphere are among the high-profile international entries for the Caulfield Cup, whilst Andre Fabre’s Vadamos and Godolphin’s Tryster join Highland Reel as the Cox Plate invitees to progress with entries today.”
