Americain was acquired by Rob Roulston, a Racing Victoria board member, for Ryan and Bamford after the six-year-old lost form in the US last year. A winner of his past three starts Americain, prepared by the Aga Khan's trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre, defeated Luca Cumani's Manighar, another Melbourne Cup-bound runner, in a driving finish.

Roulston said Americain would be sent to England to do his quarantine at Newmarket before heading to Melbourne and would not run again before the Cup. "He appears to be the right type of horse for the Melbourne Cup as he can stay, settles well and has a very good turn of foot," Roulston said.

Kevin Bamford is familiar with European stayers; he bought a share in English horse Jardines Lookout, who ran third to Makybe Diva in the 2003 Melbourne Cup. Ryan races a string of horses in Melbourne with Peter Moody and Robbie Griffiths with Avenue and Salinas shaping as the best of those to have raced.

Manighar, owned by Terry Henderson and Simon O'Donnell's OTI syndicate, was beaten a short neck after striking traffic problems in the straight. It was, however, Manighar’s best performance since OTI bought him and the result has confirmed his trip to Australia. Stablemate Bauer, runner-up in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, is expected to resume from a tendon injury in England this weekend.

The news that Americain and Manighar had moved from possible to definite Cup contenders led to both horses firming to $26 with TAB Sportsbet.
The latest addition to Lloyd Williams' team of former European horses is Imposing, who will arrive on Saturday and be the first horse to enter the new Werribee quarantine complex.

The stayer, formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute must spend three weeks at Werribee before he is allowed to join Williams' team at Mt Macedon.
Luen Yat Forever will be the first Macau-trained horse to enter at the spring carnival and should arrive on Monday.
