2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist returned to winning ways Sunday winning the Commerzbank Cup in Dusseldorf. Protectionist had been absent from the winners enclosure since winning the Melbourne Cup, but this recent win had Luke Murrell (Australian Bloodstock Syndicate Manager) telling journalists about Protectionist's plans.“The Melbourne Cup is our long-term aim,” Murrell said. “The win showed that mentally he’s feeling right as he stretched right out in winning.”
The Commerzbank Cup was the first run for Protectionist under former trainer Andreas Wohler. Protectionist was returned to Andreas Wohler after picking up an injury whilst being trained by Kris Lees.
“Everybody was holding their breath. It’s pleasing to see him back in the winner’s circle,” Murrell said.
“Andreas Wohler can’t believe how well he came out of the race,” Murrell said. “He said that he had come out of the race better than when he went in. He defeated two listed type horses, although one was a group one winner on the comeback trail.”
Protectionist is set to be rested after his recent win and the next target will be the Group 2 Hansa Preis in Hamburg July 3rd.
“After that it would be on to the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) at Deauville in August which would be the key race to decide whether he comes back or not,” he said.
Protectionist won the Prix Kergorlay before winning the Melbourne Cup the first time round, so that race will be pivotal in the decision on Protectionist attempting a second Melbourne Cup. Check out our Protectionist form guide for latest results and prize money.
TAB fixed odds cut Protectionist from $51 to $31 for the Melbourne Cup after the win.
