All eyes are on Monaco Consul as he bids to scoop a win for New Zealand trainer Mike Moroney in Saturday's $1.5m Victoria Derby at Flemington.

Although Moroney believes the field is amongst the strongest he's seen for some time, he's confident Consul is the right horse for the race, despite having a near four-week running gap.

Monaco Consul had a convincing win in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on 3 October.

After watching the horse work out at this week’s Breakfast with the Stars, Moroney was quoted by ABC Sport as saying: "It's hard to be confident with a Group One race, but I think I've got the right horse and wouldn't swap him for any others.

"I'm not concerned with the gap and am happy with the way he worked."

No such confidence surrounds Moonee Valley Vase winner Hanks and Western Australian Bridgestone, who have both been pulled from the race.

Hanks trainer Peter Moody was undecided on his horse, but pulled him after watching the three year-old gelding work on his home track at Caulfield on Tuesday.

Bridgestone is out after going down with a respiratory infection.

IASbet currently views Shamoline Warrior as the favourite at 2.80 and gives Rockferry odds of 5.00 and Monaco Consul 6.00.
