Scot Andy Murray has joined Roger Federer in pulling out of the running for the Japan Open, which starts in Tokyo on Monday.

However, Murray's withdrawal could improve his chances of winning the Australian Open in January as he bids to rest a problem wrist injury.

His decision to sit out the Japan Open means the tournament is now without two of its leading favourites.

A statement from the 22-year-old's team read: "Andy is disappointed not to be competing in Japan, but on the basis of medical advice, he has decided to give his left wrist further time to recover.

"His injury is improving on a daily basis and Andy is very close to resuming full-training. The wrist will be assessed again this weekend."

The Japan Tennis Association had previously said Swiss world number one Federer would not be appearing due to the need to rest.

He said downtime was needed following a "physically challenging year", adding he would also not be in the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000, due to appear later in October.

Murray, on the other hand, is also thought to have been influenced by the need to squeeze in a reasonable rest before he begins preparations for the Australian Open in January.

Early online tennis betting markets for the open have Murray at 5.00 with Sportsbet, behind the favourite Roger Federer on 2.90 and Rafael Nadal on 4.50 with the same bookmaker.

Australian Lleyton Hewitt is one of the big outsiders with the bookmakers, on 126.00 with Sportsbet.
