The Dragons have made a promising start to the new campaign but will they finish above their City rivals come October time?

Without question, the biggest threat to local bragging rights is the expensively assembled Chooks, who began the season as favourites to top the ladder. However, the Dragons have the burning desire to atone for last season’s failure, as well as some astute transfer business fuelling their campaign this year.

The significant outlay on marquee signing Ben Hunt has paid immediate dividends with the experienced playmaker’s poise and composure adding a crucial element to Paul McGregor’s side. The squad appears to have far more depth this year, and the scintillating form of Matt Dufty at full-back has helped to erase the vestige of Josh Dugan.

The excellent early form of James Graham is already making the Bulldogs’ decision to replace the Englishman with Aaron Woods appear foolish; the former Tigers man’s indifferent start has only served to intensify the unfavourable comparisons. It seems clear that even at this embryonic stage, Graham’s new team will finish streets ahead of his former club.

The Dragons led the competition for most metres per game and off-loads in 2017, and with the fearsome pack being reinforced by the combative Graham, it is likely that they will rank highly again this term. Hunt and Gareth Widdop are set to be the primary beneficiaries from this dominance up top, and many teams will suffer at their hands this year.

McGregor has already gone on record to say that the current roster is the best he has ever had at his disposal - 2018 could be a vintage year for the Red V.

The St George Dragons are $4.50 to finish above their Sydney rivals this year.
