The curtain-raiser for the new season will take place on March 8 with the Dragons taking on the Broncos at Jubilee Oval as Thursday night football makes a highly anticipated return to our screens. The Dragons reported back to full training, confident that they can make amends for a disastrous ending to the 2016 campaign; a fraught spell that saw their top eight hopes dissolve on the final weekend of the regular season.
The NRL fixture list has contrived to pit Ben Hunt up against his old teammates as he makes his debut for the Dragons on the opening day of the 2018 campaign, with the big money arrival set to take his first steps on the road to justifying his substantial price tag.
The Dragons look in great shape coming into the new year with some commentators declaring the current side as the strongest since their last premiership triumph back in 2010. Redemption will be the motivating factor for Paul McGregor’s outfit as they strive to put the memory of last year’s capitulation to bed. The Red V returned to training confident that they can atone for a second half of the season slump that culminated in their top eight hopes dissolved on a bitterly disappointing final weekend of the season.
Although pilloried in many quarters for that failure, the reality of the campaign was that they had exceeded expectations and overperformed in the early stages of the season, with injury setbacks eventually proving fatal to their finals’ prospects.
A repeat of last year’s start where they hit the ground running is paramount, and the influx of new blood will be crucial in minimising the debilitating effects of possessing a threadbare squad.
The current price of $1.80 suggests that punters predict that the Dragons will get off to the start that they crave.
