Scenic could be worth a shot in Cox Plate

 Scenic Shot deserves his place in Saturday's group 1 Cox Plate and shouldn't be discounted, his trainer has said.

Dan Morton told Sport 927 the veteran gelding is in good form and is well worth his appearance in the headline race at Moonee Valley.

The seven-year-old has remained an outsider in the betting markets all week, despite a consistent year.

Betfair has him on odds of 18.00, which is down from around 34.00 in the earlier markets, although still way short of favourite Whobegotyou, on 3.25.

"We feel he deserves his spot," Morton said.

"He's raced very well all year. Obviously up in Brisbane he had a stellar preparation and he wasn't far away in the Australian Cup. We thought that was a great run and his run the other day was the same.

"He's holding up good and I'm sure he'll show up on Saturday."

Scenic Shot made it into the Cox Plate thanks to his effort last up in the group 1 Turnbull Stakes.

After hovering near the front for most of the race he held on firmly as the strong finishers snapped at his heels to secure third place, a length from first placed Efficient.
