Italian football and Serie A will be a poorer place now that Jose Mourniho has completed his project at Inter Milan and moved on to pastures new, that much is for certain. Having won all that there is to win in the Italian game, and Europe, with the Nerazzurri Portugal’s finest managerial export has now been replaced by former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.
The challenge facing the Spaniard is a colossal one. He need only ask Avram Grant of the difficulties of following in the footsteps of ‘The Special One’. The former Chelsea manager guided the London club to a Champions League final and within two points of winning the Premier League title in the season following Mourinho’s departure, yet was still asked to pack his bags at the end of the season.
However, with the nucleus of Mourinho’s squad still intact the foundations are firmly in place for Benitez to secure Inter’s fifth consecutive Scudetto (sixth if you include the 2005-06 title which was awarded to Inter subsequent to the Calciopoli Scandal), and the bookmakers are certainly confident in them doing so with Bet365 offering odds of just $2.1.
Claudio Ranieri’s Roma pushed Inter all the way last season, eventually finishing just two points behind the champions; they are Centrebet’s co-second favourites along with Juventus and AC Milan, all of which can be backed at $4.5.
Of Inter’s three title challengers Roma looked best equipped to run them close again this season. They have added a, supposedly, rejuvenated Adriano to their exciting attacking line-up and should get one more fruitful season out of their head honcho Francesco Totti.
AC Milan have appointed former Cagliari manager Massimiliano Allegri to take over duties from Leonardo and it could take time for him to implement his ideas. Juventus continue to rebuild following their demotion in 2006 and now have their sixth manager at the helm in the space of just four years. Neither look to have the foundations in place to mount a serious title challenge.
Once you move away from Italy’s ‘big four’ then you are looking at double figure odds and bigger for any of the league’s remaining 16 teams. If there was one team who could upset the odds then it might be a Napoli side who have improved steadily in recent years, a speculative punt on them would pay at $67.0 with Centrebet.
