The UFC’s top-ranked Light Heavyweight is in action on the 4th August – Lyoto Machida, as you can see above, is $1.28 favourite to register another win and earn himself a shot at the title. Phil Davis, sitting at $3.45 at Sportsbet today, doesn’t look like the bookies have written him off altogether, though. What will the story of the fight be?

It’s reasonable to expect Machida to approach the fight with his trademark patience, and to go about methodically accumulating points by drawing Davis on to him before counter-striking in his own – sometimes surprising – style. Davis will look to take the fight to the floor, mostly because his striking is a weapon that he’s still developing, and so he’s much more comfortable working towards a submission. There will be fans of Phil Davis hoping that the occasion gets to Machida, and that he starts to look past this fight to the title shot it could earn him. Any impatience from Machida plays into their man’s hands, they’ll be hoping. That isn’t how we’ll be betting, though: Lyoto Machida is a pretty well seasoned veteran of 22 UFC fights, and he hasn’t chalked up 19 wins by being underprepared...
