Chael Sonnen is an outspoken sort of guy, and he hasn’t been shy about sharing all sorts of opinions in the past – about all sorts of things. Neither has he always been complimentary about his opponents in the Octagon, or about his fellow UFC fighters. But he’s been surprisingly quiet about Mauricio Rua ahead of their meeting on August 18th – perhaps because this one is going to be a tight one to call. Sonnen has in the past relished the underdog tag, but he’s the close favourite here at $1.78 as against Rua’s $1.96.

Both men will feel like they have a point to prove. The safety of your place in the UFC does seem to be judged on your most recent fights, and both Sonnen and Rua have lost three from their last five bouts, so they’ll both be keen to register a win and get themselves going forwards again. Sonnen, who’s set to make the drop down from 205 after this fight, will want some momentum to take with him. Rua will have no intention of letting that happen. Other than the odds you see above, have a look at Sonnen to win it on points at $2.35, but the bookies reckon it’s more likely to end sooner than it is to end later – you’ll get $5.05 if it stops in the first, and then the odds go up with each round to a long $18.50 if there’s a stoppage in the fifth. If you’re backing Rua to win it, his most likely win is by KO at $3.22...
