Viewed handed 1kg penalty for Melbourne Cup

 Viewed will carry joint topweight of 58kg for the Melbourne Cup following his win in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

This puts him level with Efficient in the weights and sees him become joint favourite for the November 3 race with Sportsbet, on 6.00.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said Viewed's Saturday victory confirmed him as "one of the great stayers of the modern era".

Last year's Melbourne Cup winner hovered behind the leading group before breaking through the inside to win by two lengths to Roman Emperor in Saturday's Caulfield Cup.

Carpenter said: "He was already high up in the Melbourne Cup weights and his new weight of 58kg represents an increase of 5kg on his Cup winning weight in 2008.

"He will need to emulate the deeds of Makybe Diva in 2005 when she became the only horse in the last 30 years to win the Melbourne Cup with more than 57kg."

Sportsbet has Speed Gifted and Alcopop as joint second favourites for the Flemington showpiece, both on odds of 7.00.

Vigor is next on odds of 13.00, while Roman Emperor, second in the Caulfield Cup, stands on 15.00.
