Roger Federer managed to survive a challenging World Tour Finals Group A match at the O2 Arena in London.
In the Sunday evening match, which was by no means a clear cut win for Federer, the score was 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 at the close of play.
Federer confirmed he had a clear understanding of the way the match was playing.
He said: "It was a crucial match for me to get off with a win in the round-robin stages. Fernando is a great player and I'm happy I was able to come through."
Rafael Nadal is Federer's main rival, and he took the number one ranking from the Swiss player last season.
Federer will be hoping to reclaim his authority from Nadal on the circuit this year, and winning the World Tour matches will see him get closer to this particular goal.
Federer was not playing his best during the first round-robin match, delivering an unexpectedly high number of unforced errors in the first set.
He managed to pull back in the remaining two sets to bring his game to the level where he could score the win.
Federer is on at 1.77 in online tennis betting markets to win against his next opponent, Andy Murray.
